Moving in a New Direction
Written on January 19, 2011
When we first began the Sterling skatepark project there was only 1 skatepark in Loudoun County. Our goal with the project was to build something that wasn't already provided to the 13,000+ skateboarders living in the county. We began with the vision of constructing a skate plaza that was friendly to both skaters and community residents - a multi-use park. LOCO was determined to provide the community with this feature knowing that it would be a unique and useful park that skaters and residents would enjoy and needed.
Over the past year, two similar skate plazas have successfully opened in Herndon and South Riding. With this now in perspective, the need for a street-style skate plaza in Loudoun is much lower than it used to be. Although Sterling is still in need of a legal skate area, we believe our current plans do not suffice the community's current needs as much as they did when the project began. Our determination to get a skate park in Sterling is still strong, however, there may be another option that could serve local skaters greater.
Therefore, we are considering changing our project's direction in a way that will better satisfy skaters and the community as a whole. At this time, we have a few options floating in our brainstorm bubble but would like to reach out to local skaters and other residents to help contribute ideas that will determine our direction for the next coming months/years. The type of feedback we are looking for is: what type of skate park you would like LOCO to work towards next? Whether it be an indoor park, miniature skate spots, or to just keep our current skate plaza plans - it's up to you guys to help us construct the next big skate haven in northern Virginia.
